Congress Must Pass the First Amendment Defense Act (FADA)

The seven-week district work period is a great opportunity for constituents to speak to their reps while they’re back here in Texas. Let them hear directly from you.

The San Antonio Tea Party has invited Congressman Will Hurd and Congressman Lamar Smith to speak to our group at one of our Friday luncheons or Saturday morning breakfasts, so we can engage in conversation with them and share our thoughts, as well as hear theirs.

During the last week before Congress went on recess, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee held a hearing on the First Amendment Defense Act (H.R. 2802), but did not follow the hearing up with a markup of the bill that is necessary before a full House floor vote can occur. Passing FADA would prevent the federal government from discriminating against those who believe in traditional marriage.

Use this time to remind your Congressman that the bill not only has our support but also the support of 172 House Republicans, so they should move this religious liberty bill through his committee as soon as possible.

For anyone who may wonder why FADA is necessary, remember the Atlanta Fire Chief who was fired from his job because he expressed support for traditional marriage? His support for traditional marriage was said to be discriminatory against the LBGTQ community; and, even though his comments came while he was off duty, they decided the perceived offense was so egregious that termination was in order. So the Atlanta Fire Chief himself became the victim of blatant and unwarranted discrimination by radical leftists. The thought police believe discrimination is fine as long as it is them doing the discriminating.

It is easy to see how this out-of-control radicalism could spread and impact many more than just an unfortunate Fire Chief. Imagine being precluded from bidding a federal contract because you have been outspoken about your support for traditional marriage or any other belief system that the leftist activists oppose. If supporting marriage between a man and a woman discriminates against gays, then why couldn’t support for Christianity be considered to discriminate against Islam? There is no good end to this radical leftist assault on reason. So we must take a stand now to stop this cancer before it metastasizes even further into our society and becomes the social norm. This is why the FADA is so important.

Allen Tharp is President of the San Antonio Tea Party.
