Texas Speaker Joe Straus Survey – What You Said

Texas Speaker Joe Straus Survey – What You Said

We Say: As promised last week, these are the comments you made as you responded to the “Straus Satisfaction” Survey. If you would like to review the survey questions and the percentage breakdown of the responses, CLICK HERE

What can we do with your responses? Quite a lot. All across the state grassroots organizations like San Antonio Tea Party have come to similar conclusions. Our voice added to theirs is becoming pretty loud. Who hears that loud voice? The Leadership of the Republican Party of Texas. He was elected Speaker by the Legislators elected to the House, the majority of whom are Republicans. Any kind of definitive parliamentary action, censure, no confidence, or other must come from them. This time we believe it will. Republican leaders are seeing the opinions of informed voters, and they all must stand for re-election before next session.

Not many years back, politicians like Straus were free to make their deals and parliamentary tricks virtually out of sight. With today’s instant communication shining a spotlight of inquiry on those tricks, bad legislators are being held accountable by an informed electorate.

Our continuing commitment to you is to bring you a bit of that spotlight of inquiry, to do our part to make you as informed an electorate as possible.

Straus Satisfaction Survey with your added comments

Do you live in Texas State House District 121? . . . If YES, please rate how you think Representative Straus has represented you in the Texas Legislature?

  1. Dump him. He’s more like a democrat.
  2. I have no representation and no voice in the Texas House.
  3. Stinks
  4. The only communications involve promoting his agenda and blowing smoke to cover misbehavior.
  5. I am a CONSERVATIVE AND NO LONGER A REPUBLICAN. This is why I joined the Tea Party but you are no longer active you a just a REPUBLICAN support group. Where were the Conservative Candidates for Mayor and County services since April 15, 2009?
The Tea Party is looking (sic) my confidence too!!!
  6. We just moved to Bexar Co. and my new voter card does not have my district on it so I am not sure which district I am in. If I am in 121 the answer would be definitely not!!
  7. No doubt he is beholden to the lobbyists and not to the ordinary citizen. His refusal to allow common-sense bills to come to a vote speaks volumes!
  8. He acts as though he is district 121
  9. Not a Republican.
  10. Acts like all politicians backed by big money – they don’t give a dam about anything except their agenda. I let him know when I was greeted at the polls but I could tell he didn’t care. Just like the Wolfe’s in the Court house- trollies, trains, Baseball Stadiums & toll roads. Their DNA doesn’t understand NO” BY THE
  11. I have reached out to his office multiple times with my wishes, I’ve received no actual response to the content of my voice and emails . . . rather I receive campaign propaganda from the office that my contributions no longer help to fund
  12. Republican party does terrible job of supporting conservative candidates, so big money Joe wins
  13. I told him the last time he ran that I would not be voting for him! He was at the polling place at the Brook Hollow Library! I said that he was not letting bills get through and that he appointed too many Democrats to important committees that were holding up legislation!
  14. I talked to Straus in person and challenged what he had been doing and just gurgled and blushed. He knows he’s a rino.
  15. I have contributed to his Primary competitors since I first came to this district six years ago. When he won the Primaries, I voted for his Democrat opponent because I believed a freshman Democrat representative would do less harm to Texas than Joe Strauss as Speaker.
  16. Many of us have fought against his RINO attitude. Get rid of his ass.
  17. He has done some good for his own peeps. but for the most part. NO.  He is essentially a DEMOCRAT! (I believe they call them “RINOS”)
  18. A sorry leftist.
  19. Awful but what good does it do…we did this last go around and he was still voted in.

Governor Abbott called a Special Session after the 85th Legislative Session closed. He laid out 20 items he expected to come up for a vote. Although passed by the Senate and sent to the House, 5 of those Special Session Agenda bills were never brought to the floor of the House by Speaker Straus. One of those was “Senate Bill 6, the “Bathroom Legislation.”What is your opinion about this bill not being voted on by the full House?

  1. This bill is not a so-called bathroom bill, rather it’s drawing a line in the sand about truth and worldview. The vast majority of Texans do not want the progressive worldview that this ideology comes from. It has been wrongly marketed to be about bathrooms. It’s really about much more and is an essential piece of conservative policy. I’m furious at Strauss and his sycophants for twisting this issue and ignoring the truth.
  2. The bill went too far. It should have been limited to locker rooms and shower rooms unless the person had the correct body parts.
  3. Common sense. You are born with a “willie” you are a male.
  4. I do not want men in the restroom with me!
  5. Speaker Straus betrays his constituency and the people of Texas when he places the interests of his political cronies ahead of the interests of the families of Texas.
  6. I cannot understand why this Bill has not passed. Having lived in San Antonio, I could not understand why Straus was ever elected.
  7. Hope his daughter/grand daughter meets one of those gender persons in their life time.
  8. Voting has a way of exposing what representatives truly support.
  9. I am a CONSERVATIVE AND NO LONGER A REPUBLICAN. This is why I joined the Tea Party but you are no longer active you a just a REPUBLICAN support group. Where were the Conservative Candidates for Mayor and County services since April 15, 2009? The Tea Party is looking my confidence too!!!
  10. traitors to our country, both republicans and democraps…they will be removed!!!!
  11. Should not need to introduce a bill that existing law already covers. we have laws that cover indecency, weather a person identifies as the opposite sex doesn’t negate the fact that if I male exposes himself to a female it’s illegal regardless if he claims to identify as female. Enforce the law as written, if they have undergone reassignment surgery then it doesn’t apply so the bathroom issue isn’t relevant.
  12. Strauss has been promising he was against it, yet Republicans keep voting him to be Speaker
  13. We need a Majority Party Speaker like every other legislature on the planet.
  14. We, the citizens, deserved to have it put to a vote. Straus has too much control. Texas is a Republic, let’s be Texans again.
  15. Straus has no right to decide for Texans. We have Reps to do that for us.
  16. Totally unnecessary. Plenty of laws already on the books to do what’s necessary. Red herring!
  17.  I think there are more important items to be focused on than this.
  18. The government has absolutely no business regulating who and how bathroom republicans’s are used. They need to focus upon reducing regulation and spending, not increasing it.
  19. All items should always be brought up and voted on in a special session. Like “Privacy Rights”
  20. Show me the money backers !
  21. I was against what Obama tried to do in the schools and I was against the same kind of over reach from our state government in the opposite direction. guess I’m more under the libritarian umbrella on this issue. Let’s schools and property owners deal with this. If we need to provide those owners legal cover then I am for that but marking a state law that takes the freedom from schools and property owners away seems to be against our core principles.
  22. Who is SATP PAC endorsing to run against Straus?
  23. I am angry to the point that self-serving politicians need to be ousted, removed from the office in which they refuse to serve. When will government start LISTENING to the people that elected them???
  24. It is truly my opinion the House should have been allowed to vote on this issue. Moreover, I feel that all issues of Taxation and Morals should be vested in the People and not the Government.
  25. Strauss is a bought and paid for pol; ignoring his oath of office.
  26. Strays is a RINO and must be replaced as speaker
  27. Not needed since the Obama education department mandate was rescinded.
  28. Too much economic impact. Better to ask for return to religious rights.
  29. Speaker Strauss appears to be in the tank for the progressives, his constituents deserve better . . . he’d be hard pressed to find a single person who voted him into office who is in favor of the bathroom bill.

Governor Abbott called a Special Session … 5 of those Special Session Agenda bills were never brought to the floor of the House by Speaker Straus. One of those was “Property Tax Reform – Senate Bill 2, Senate Bill 669.”What is your opinion about this bill not being voted on by the full House?

  1. Current property tax laws allow local governments to steal from citizens with near impunity. Again, Strauss has completely ignored the party he claims to represent.
  2. Too many taxes.
  3. The bill would go a long way to keep local tax and spenders under control!
  4. Too many people are being taxed out of their homes in this state due to the incredible burden of property taxes. I am a retired teacher with my 31 yo Down Syndrome son living with me. We can’t afford the CONTINUAL $25 to $30 per month increase due to property tax evaluations each year. Our income isn’t going up by that amount each year. I do not think that property owners should bear so much of the tax burden in TX. Increase sales tax so all are taxed on spending, including ones here illegally.
  5. Texas has an awful history of Property Tax abuse. There needs to be changes made now rather than later.
  6. Every major city in Texas is run by liberals. A limit on how much they can rip off property owners is not in their interests.
  7. Seniors w/o children in the public school system need some Real Tax relief, better than illegals receive.
  8. San Antonio placed notice of a 7.7% increase this year alone. Had the original bill passed, we would have at least had a vote on representation for the taxes.
  10. weak knee, spine-less bunch of SOB’s…  Ditto!
  11. Speaker Straus needs to go!
  12. no doubt Strauss knew that this bill would provide much needed relief to the Texas Taxpayers.  Straus has a different plan and it’s not for the good of the people. ?????
  13. We should keep property taxes as low as possible in order to protect private property rights
  14. See comments on #2
  15. Speaker Strauss appears to be in the tank for the progressives, his constituents deserve better . . . he’d be hard pressed to find a single person who voted him into office who is didn’t expect property tax reform.
  16. Property is a Constitutional right. Our rights should not be taxed.
  17. Needed Badly
  18. see above.
  19. It is unfair for property owners to bear the burden of public schools that are used by those who pay very little if anything towards the education of their children.
  20. It’s SCHOOL FINANCE that needs to be addressed. Besides, no one seems to recognize that it’s public safety will be critically affected… since 40-60% of city and county budgets go to public safety.
  21. With Texas being one of the top 4 or 5 highest property taxed citizens in the country, it is high time cities and county property taxes get reigned in. Some of us with a fixed income are on the verge of being taxed out of our homes. We deserve a break!
  22. Texas property taxes are exorbitant and often go to pay for anti-conservative programs in the so-called ‘education’ field.
  23. While I’m all in favor of property tax reform this bill did not adequately address the issue and left too much opportunity for municipalities to continue over-taxing us on property. The state’s education department greatly increases education costs exacerbating property taxes and this wasn’t even touched upon.
  24. All items should always be brought up and voted on in a special session.

Governor Abbott called a Special Session … 5 of those Special Session Agenda bills were never brought to the floor of the House by Speaker Straus. One of those was “House Bill 2107 – Medical Marijuana.”What is your opinion about this bill not being voted on by the full House?

  1. It’s a drug. Medical use is a ruse. Still is a gateway drug.
  2. Restricted to Dr’s Rx and handled through licensed pharmacies, I’d be for it.
  3. Some students already come stoned to class/school, they do not need pass to have the ones on the fence to join them.
  4. It’s probably time we rethink the legal craziness over marijuana.
  6. state of texas should consider a similar bill to the Colorado law’s for marijuana…there is so much money to be made,,,proceed’s from marijuana law will pay for schools, roads, property taxes…you know the important stuff, that’s on people’s mind these day’s.
  7. We send or reps to Austin or DC to represent us. We expect them to do just that. No voice no vote. What’s the point of our voting?
  8. This is a stepping stone to marijuana shops and recreational use. Suggest inviting Bill Bennett to speak about it. His book “Going to Pot” is very revealing and the data and truth not heard in public.
  9. I never want to touch the stuff but let’s stop locking people up for a drug less dangerous than alcohol. And the left wants to use this issue to motivate their voters, if we take that away from then we can keep our advantage
  10. See above.
  11. There is plenty for a citizen to be angry about. These filthy, self-serving politicians care NOTHING about the quality of life of the people that elected them. All of these bills that were ignored affect the quality of life of citizens. Ignoring these bills is ignoring the citizenry and I am incensed about all of it. The governor and the Leiutenanat governor did their part. The rest of the pack, led by Strauss, left the citezens out in the cold.
  12. Pot is not the answer to anything, being the plant is not even natural anymore this should be illegal.
  13. See comments on #2
  14. Right now still illegal. Can wait 20+ more years to come to vote. That way remains illegal until more studies of it’s impact on other communities is known.
  15. What on earth does he think he was sent to Austin for if not to legislate the way his constituents told him to do? He’s counting on nobody paying attention and hopefully those days are over. In my opinion, he needs to move to the Democrat Party.
  16. Keep govt out of my life/health care as much as possible.
  17. See above.
  18. Medical marijuana is a slippery slope we do not need to walk on.
  19. I am only for medical marijuana NOT for recreational use!!!
  20. Texas should decriminalize all drugs. The drug war, just like prohibition nearly 100 years ago, is a complete failure.
  21. All items should always be brought up and voted on in a special session.

Governor Abbott called a Special Session … 5 of those Special Session Agenda bills were never brought to the floor of the House by Speaker Straus. One of those was “Private School Choice – Senate Bill 3, House Bill 1335.”What is your opinion about this bill not being voted on by the full House?

  1. I Am in special education sales and this bill the way it is written does not solve the problem with school choice.
  2. Big Donors and Big Money Talks in Texas!
  3. Why not take a vote, Joe?
  4. This makes most angry when the peoples’ interest is to regain local control of education, our Speaker keeps education in Texas in the Dark Ages. He robs parents of their responsibility to guide the education of their children.
  5. Based on the current School system, It is mandatory that we have private School Choice.
  6. TEA strikes again!
  7. School choice is a good for parents who wish not to have their children in violent behavior 185 school days. And condoned even with zero toler- ance.
  8. I just hope we get a more conservative speaker than straus.
  9. One of the biggest problems with the schools in Texas is the monopoly. Give them a reason to be frugal and we’ll see improvement.
  11. in favor of school choice

San Antonio Tea Party has been beating the drum to ‘Oust Straus’ for several years; we were not exactly alone in the effort. This time around there is truly a growing groundswell.

    Hans,
Thank you for taking a stand that might not match up with most of this audience.

  2. Hans R F Helland  September 13, 2017 at 2:09 pm

Joe Straus has done a great job as Speaker and there is no way a more conservative Speaker can be elected. It’s kind of like the opposition to our President. You cannot see the forest for the trees. This kind of thinking results in no progress on Obama Care, on tax reduction and reform and on immigration. The end result of that pandering and myopia are Democrat advances and control again (think doubling of our national debt). And that type of government is for sure not conservative. Hans Helland
