In Trump News: Last week President Trump made big news with a new executive order directing the departments of Health and Human Services, Labor, and Treasury to take steps to make it easier for people to buy coverage through association health plans. It also would allow people to buy low-cost, short-term health insurance plans and expand the use of health savings accounts. This should allow insurance companies to offer lower premiums outside of Obamacare.

This won’t happen quickly though. The process will take several months to get all the regulations written, and it could be 2018 or even 2019 before it takes effect.

Within hours after that executive order, he made big news again by reversing another of Obama’s unconstitutional executive orders that paid illegal subsidies to insurance companies.

This should mean that these taxpayer subsidies to big insurance corporations will finally stop, and none too soon.

The White House and DOJ said the government cannot legally continue to pay the cost-sharing subsidies because they lack a formal authorization by Congress. A federal court had also ruled these subsidies unconstitutional. The Constitution says that the government shall not spend money unless Congress appropriates the funds. Regarding these Obama subsidies, Congress had refused to appropriate the money, so these bailouts were clearly illegal.

Regardless, last year Struggling Taxpayers were forced to give $7 billion in illegal subsidies to wealthy insurance corporations, even though these companies reported a whopping $4.5 billion in profits.

Trump later sent out a tweet saying “Dems should call me to fix.” So I hope this is not just a part of some grand negotiation plan, because no one has the authority to negotiate an unconstitutional deal. However, The WSJ reported that Trump has privately told at least one lawmaker that the payments may continue if a bipartisan deal is reached on health care. We’ll see.

As usual, Democrats lost their minds. Democrat leadership immediately came out and said the orders were a spiteful act of vast, pointless sabotage leveled at working families and the middle class.

How do you feel about these executive orders?

  • Will Trump hold the line?
  • Where does the Federal Government get the authority to spend tax dollars to subsidize corporations?
  • Are Federal bailouts constitutional?
  • Should there be criminal or civil penalties on government officials who spend tax dollars illegally?

Let’s not be so quick to declare victory on this one. It sounds like Trump is considering a 2 year extension on this. I can only speculate that Washington (and the Prez) are interested in really ending o’care. anytime soon.
